Put simply, a solar eclipse is a shadow play between three actors: the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. Illuminated by the Sun, the Moon casts a shadow out into space: a long, thin cone, stretching about 374,000 km out into space, called the umbra. Anyone inside that umbral cone will see the Sun completely blocked out by the Moon. Surrounding the umbra, there is a zone where the Sun is only partly hidden: this is known as the penumbra. Extending out from the tip of the umbral cone is a part of the penumbra known as the antumbra, which comes into play during annular eclipses. 2, record 2, English, - antumbra

1, record 2, French, - anti%2Dombre

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 DEF
An atmospheric optical phenomenon, particularly in the polar regions, in which the observer appears to be engulfed in a uniformly white glow owing to the lack of contrast between the sky and the surface; shadows, horizon and clouds are not discernible, and the sense of depth and orientation are lost. 4, record 3, English, - whiteout
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Whiteout occurs over an unbroken snow cover and beneath a uniformly overcast sky, when, with the aid of the snow blink effect, the light from the sky is about equal to that from the snow surface. Blowing snow may be an additional cause. 5, record 3, English, - whiteout
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 OBS
This phenomenon is experienced in the air as well as on the ground. 5, record 3, English, - whiteout
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 3 OBS
Today the term whiteout is [also] often used to describe a blizzard or snowsquall when blowing snow has reduced visibility to a few metres. But this is not a true whiteout. True whiteouts occur mostly in the Arctic and the Antarctic when unbroken snow cover and a uniformly overcast sky combine to produce a solid white glow. People in whiteouts see no shadows or horizon and lose all sense of depth and orientation. 6, record 3, English, - whiteout

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 DEF
4, record 3, French, - voile%20blanc
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
5, record 3, French, - voile%20blanc
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 OBS

1, record 3, Spanish, - paisaje%20blanco

Thin altostratus usually evolves from the gradual thickening of a veil of cirrostratus. It nearly always appears as a layer of great horizontal extent.
