La propagation du son doit se faire dans un milieu élastique : un gaz(l'air), un liquide(l'eau) ou un solide(un rail de chemin de fer). Il n’ y a pas de propagation possible du son dans le vide. Un milieu est dit élastique lorsqu'il est capable de se déformer pour encaisser un choc ou laisser passer une onde, puis de reprendre son état initial [...] La propagation du son ne consiste pas en un déplacement de matière, mais en une perturbation qui, elle, se déplace à travers la matière. En effet, les molécules déplacées retrouvent toujours leur place après le passage de la perturbation. Ceci est dû à l'élasticité du milieu [...] Empiriquement, la propagation du son diminue avec la distance. Ceci est dû à l'amortissement du système : l'air oppose une résistance au son, comme il oppose une résistance aux corps qui le traversent. Il en est de même d’autres fluides comme l'eau.
