Selon la nature de ce gaz, on distingue le soudage MIG(de l'anglais Metal Inert Gas), dans lequel la protection est assurée par un gaz inerte(argon ou hélium), et le soudage MAG(de l'anglais Metal Active Gas), dans lequel la protection est assurée par un gaz ou un mélange gazeux actif, contenant généralement du CO2. Comme ce procédé de soudage MIG utilise un apport de chaleur peu élevé et des vitesses d’avancement élevées, il convient à l’assemblage de pièces d’automobiles en aciers légers et à paroi mince.
