Ce procédé fut mis au point dans l'industrie aéronautique pour l'assemblage des alliages d’aluminium et de magnésium, afin de pallier les inconvénients des flux excessivement corrosifs qui devaient être soigneusement éliminés après l'opération de soudage.

Les européens, quant à eux, utilisent l'argon qu'ils extraient de l'air où il se trouve dans la proportion de 1/100 comparativement à l'hélium qui lui aussi s’y trouve, mais dans la très faible proportion de 1/200 000.
