The image processing consisted in generating intensity images and one coherence image. To facilitate their analysis and interpretation, a coloured composition has been created with the results. This composition is obtained by adding the coherence image in red, the average of both images phase intensities in green and the difference between these phase intensities in blue. As such, a high coherence level (value close to 1) appears in red and indicates a very good phase correlation between the two images, a consequence of the various mechanisms of radar signal scattering and of the lack of change which could affect the target. On the contrary, a weak coherence level (value tending to 0) appears in black and indicates a movement in these zones during the 24 hours interval which separated the two image shots. Lastly, the white spots correspond to areas with a strong radar signal backscattering i.e. with zones of hills or vegetation. 3, record 18, English, - colour%20composition

5, record 26, French, - t%C3%A9l%C3%A9d%C3%A9tection%20hyperspectrale

Satellite derived remote sensed images are representations of the variation in intensity of electromagnetic energy reflected from the Earth's surface. The specific image produced is determined by the wavelength of the electromagnetic energy that is being sensed, and the physical properties of the matter that reflects the energy. Aerial photographs use only the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (5 x 107 metres = .5 microns), whereas Landsat TM and SPOT images record the Earth's reflectivity at seven different wavelengths in the visible and infrared range, and radar images record the reflectivity of wavelengths in the non-visible range of 1 to 10 cm (microwaves). 3, record 35, English, - infrared%20band

3, record 35, French, - bande%20infrarouge

The radar frequency bands were first designated by code letters for secrecy during World War II; these letters are still in common use, although the exact frequency intervals to which they apply have undergone some redefinition. They all fall within the UHF, SHF, and EHF radio frequency bands. ... Radars operating in the S, C, and X bands are the ones mainly used for precipitation measurements. Attenuation of the transmitted radio frequency energy by atmospheric gases, precipitation, and cloud particles is severe for all frequency bands higher than X band, and even X band can suffer severe attenuation in heavy rain. Nevertheless, because radars operating in the K, Ka, and W bands are able to detect clouds, they are used for cloud observations even though they are not able to penetrate far through precipitation. 4, record 36, English, - radar%20band

The full maximum likelihood classifier uses the Gaussian threshold stored in each class signature to determine if a given pixel falls within the class or not. The threshold is the radius (in standard deviation units) of a hyperellipse surrounding the mean of the class in feature space. If the pixel falls inside the hyperellipse, it is assigned to the class, otherwise it is assigned to a null class. However, for this classification, the null class option was not utilized, thus the thresholds were ignored and every pixel was assigned to the most probable class, the nearest class based upon the Mahalanobis distance measure (Richards, 1986). 3, record 48, English, - class%20signature
