Classiquement le terme de stimulant respiratoire, tout comme celui d’analeptique, était réservé aux substances activant la commande ventilatoire. Ce sens restrictif était la conséquence d’un mode d’action reconnu : une neurostimulation induisant une hyperventilation. Les molécules actuelles semblent avoir, par opposition, un effet beaucoup plus diversifié.
