If a particular action or response causes the cancellation or postponement of an event that would otherwise have occurred, the action may be said to be an avoidance response. Successful avoidance of unpleasant or harmful consequences has obvious adaptive value, but has long seemed to pose a serious problem for theories of learning. A successful avoidance response is one which is followed by the absence of an aversive event ... Another [solution], adopted by two-factor theories, is to assume that avoidance responses are reinforced because they reduce a state of fear classically conditioned to stimuli signaling the occurrence of the aversive event. A third, adopted by some radical behaviorists, is to describe the operations that appear to be required to reinforce avoidance responding and to eschew speculation about the inner processes of learning responsible. 2, record 3, English, - avoidance%20response

In classical conditioning, an ineffective stimulus called the conditioned stimulus (or more correctly, the to-be-conditioned stimulus) is repeatedly paired with a highly effective stimulus called the unconditioned stimulus. The conditioned stimulus initially produces only a small response or no response at all; the unconditioned stimulus elicits a powerful response without requiring prior conditioning. As a result of conditioning (or learning), the conditioned stimulus becomes capable of producing either a larger response or a completely new response. 1, record 9, English, - conditioned%20stimulus

The tendency for a behavior that has been reinforced in one situation to occur in similar, but different, situations. Generalization is the opposite of discrimination. For example, a young child's saying "Daddy" in presence of father has been reinforced. This response may generalize to other men. That is, the child will have the tendency to say "Daddy" when in the presence of the mailman, milkman, or uncle. The greater the similarity between father and these other men, the greater the likelihood of generalization. This response will eventually be emitted only in the presence of father, owing to the discrimination training procedure. 3, record 10, English, - generalization
