Avant d’être acheminées vers les centres supérieurs, les voies de la nociception, comme toutes les afférences sensorielles, traversent le thalamus. Les neurones nociceptifs occupent donc une position minoritaire au sein de cette structure cérébrale. Parmi les nombreux neurones constituant le complexe ventro-basal, certains possèdent, soit les caractéristiques des neurones nociceptifs spécifiques, soit celles des nociceptifs non-spécifiques. Les influx y accédant proviennent des premières lames via le faisceau spino-thalamique(néospino-thalamique) avant d’être projetés directement au niveau du cortex somatosensoriel. La composante sensori-discriminative de la douleur, c'est-à-dire les informations concernant la localisation et l'identification du stimulus douloureux(nature et intensité), est attribuée à ces projections somatosensorielles. 1, record 2, French, - somatosensoriel
