En ce qui concerne le stockage par volants, les systèmes couramment disponibles sont encore relativement peu attrayants, pour de multiples raisons, en particulier leur coût excessif et l'énergie de rotation perdue par friction après quelques heures de fonctionnement seulement. C'est pourquoi leur développement a moins pour but le stockage d’énergie électrique que la récupération de l'énergie libérée pendant le freinage d’un véhicule(par exemple un autobus).
