Nano crystal Get-Away Special(NANOGAS) - The Nanocrystal Get-Away Special (NANO-GAS) is a Space Shuttle payload designed to grow high-quality crystals of an advanced new class of materials called crystalline nanoporous semiconductors. Because of their unique absorption characteristics, these materials could find applications in high-precision lasers, computers and other high-performance electronic devices. The samples were successfully processed in May 1996 on board Space Shuttle Mission STS-77. An increase in the size and quality of nanoporous crystals can be achieved by conducting these experiments in microgravity, where the gravitational forces are minimal. 2, record 12, English, - nano%20crystal%20%5C%22get%2Daway%20special%5C%22

In the presense of an external magnetic field, the energy levels of atoms are split. This splitting is described well by the Zeeman effect if the splitting is small compared to the energy difference between the unperturbed levels, i.e., for sufficiently weak magnetic fields. This can be visualized with the help of a vector model of total angular momentum. If the magnetic field is large enough, it disrupts the coupling between the orbital and spin angular momenta, resulting in a different pattern of splitting. Because elements that are close to each other in the Periodic Table differ considerably in their neutron-scattering ability, neutron diffraction is capable of distinguishing between them. For example, carbon nitrogen, and oxygen atoms can be readily identified by neutron diffraction, where as they appear almost identical by the x-ray method. More accurate determination of the bond lengths of light atoms and distribution of molecular bonding electrons is also possible. Details of molecular structure that can only be inferred by other techniques can often be observed directly by neutron diffraction. In these terms the atom is the unit of matter that contains a small, dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by sufficient negative electrons to make the whole electrically neutral. Structure. All atoms are about the same size, and this fact is a clue to the nature of their structure. The atomic diameter is about 2 X 10[superscript] -8 cm (2 hundred-millionths of a centimeter).
