3, record 1, French, - structure%20secondaire

Local interactions between nearby amino acids give rise to alpha helixes, beta sheets or other forms of secondary structure. These subassemblies, acting as more or less coherent units, organize themselves into domains. The geometric arrangement of the domains constitutes the tertiary structure. The presence of the same secondary structures and domains in many dissimilar proteins argues that they are not mere artificial abstractions introduced by the biochemist; on the contrary, they seem to be fundamental units in the evolution and diversification of proteins. Many proteins have a level of organization beyond the tertiary structure. They are composed of multiple polypeptide strands held together by a variety of weak bonds and sometimes further cemented by disulfide linkages. 1, record 2, English, - tertiary%20structure

Optimal application of protein engineering technology will require understanding how the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide chain specifies its spatial conformation. It is now clear that polypeptide chain folding and subunit assembly proceeds through sequential pathways involving defined intermediates. The critical amino acid instructions directing these pathways appear to be dispersed through the sequence... Very similar patterns of chain folding and domain structure can arise from different amino acid sequences that show little or no homology. The immunoglobulins are a prime example of conservation of structure despite extensive differences in amino acid sequence. 3, record 4, English, - chain%20folding

Paradoxically, because of its toxicity and its high specificity for beta cells, streptozotocin has been used with some success to treat a rare tumor of human beta cells known as insulinoma. In general, however, drugs and chemicals that kill beta cells were employed merely as tools for investigating the pathogenesis of diabetes in experimental animals. Several proteins or parts of proteins that do not have homologous sequences are observed to adopt a similar tertiary arrangement of packed [alpha]-helices and [beta]-strands.... Generally, it is an open question whether the similarity of tertiary structures arises by convergent evolution to a structural and/or functional favourable conformation or by divergence during which sequence homologies have been lost.... Combined with the search for key amino acid residues, it is likely that structural similarity will be recognized by comparing profiles of secondary structure predictions and by using empirical rules governing the packing of [alpha]-helices and [beta]-strands. 1, record 8, English, - beta%2Dstrand

The carrier-binding method is the oldest immobilization method for enzymes.... The amount of enzyme bound to the carrier and the activity after immobilization depend markedly on the nature of the carrier. Although the selection of a carrier also depends on the nature of the enzyme itself, the following aspects must be considered; (1) particle size, (2) surface area, (3) molar ratio of hydrophilic to hydrophobic groups, and (4) chemical composition. Generally speaking, increases in the ratio of hydrophilic groups and in surface area increase the amount of bound enzyme per unit carrier, resulting in higher activity of the immobilized enzyme. 1, record 9, English, - hydrophilic%20group
