Torrefaction involves heating wood at relatively high temperatures to improve the properties of the wood without the addition of chemicals or toxic substances. The process is different from heat treatment in that it is done in an oxygen-deprived environment to prevent the wood from igniting, which means it is possible to heat the wood to temperatures between 160 °C and 245 °. 1, record 16, English, - torrefaction

2, record 16, French, - torr%C3%A9faction

Cedar shakes are the ideal roofing material for many areas of the Western United States. A wood roof keeps your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. A Meeker shake roof can endure 130 mph winds. In the winter, a Meeker cedar roof will effectively shed snow and ice. Cedar shakes are resistive to thermal shock associated with freeze-thaw conditions. Where fire is a hazard, Meeker cedar shakes optionally treated with FTX are fire retardant for life. 3, record 21, English, - wood%20roof

An arrangement of wood that is standing end on and is built like a pyramid or cone. Every novice knows the wigwam fire--indeed if a child who has never made a fire were told to build one, he would surely turn up with a wigwam, for it is the natural arrangement. But nevertheless, it is not without importance in the craft, for it is the core of every fire lay no matter how elaborate. Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size. Remember to keep it tall and slender. And keep it small--a foot high and a foot wide at the base. 4, record 28, English, - wigwam%20fire

3, record 28, French, - feu%20en%20c%C3%B4ne

Extruded polystyrene [XEPS] foam begins with solid polystyrene crystals. The crystals, along with special additives and a blowing agent, are fed into an extruder. Within the extruder the mixture is combined and melted, under controlled conditions of high temperature and pressure, into a viscous plastic fluid. The hot, thick liquid is then forced in a continuous process through a die. As it emerges from the die it expands to a foam, is shaped, cooled, and trimmed to dimension. This continuous extrusion process results in a unique foam product with a uniform closed-cell structure, a smooth continuous skin, and consistent product qualities, qualities unequaled by other insulation types. 6, record 44, English, - extruded%20polystyrene%20foam
Record number: 44, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Extruded polystyrene foam ... There is considerable confusion about extruded foam, mainly because it is made by many different companies, and appears in many different colors and densities. There is "artboard", green foam, pink foam, gray foam, blue foam and more. All of these are extruded polystyrene. The lowest density extruded styrene foams all range about 1.75 pounds per cubic foot. Curiously, extruded foam panels from the same manufacturer exhibit considerable variation in density ... ranging from 1.8 to 2.1 pounds per cubic foot, all in the same batch. ... Different manufacturers also produce different qualities of extruded foam. Some foam seems to have more impurities and air bubbles than others. 7, record 44, English, - extruded%20polystyrene%20foam
