Les montagnes formant une chaîne appartiennent généralement à une même structure géologique ou à une même formation de roche. Un ensemble de sommets apparentés disposés en cercle plutôt que de façon linéaire s’appelle un massif. Un ensemble de chaînes de montagnes, de massifs et d’autres reliefs de même origine constitue un système de montagnes, et plusieurs systèmes forment une cordillère.
