Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
DEF

A group of fine-grained, generally porphyritic, extrusive rocks having alkali feldspar and minor mafic minerals as the main components, and possibly a small amount of sodic plagioclase.

OBS

The extrusive equivalent of syenite.

OBS

trachyte: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
  • Tectonics
DEF

A group of extrusive igneous rocks, typically porphyritic and commonly exhibiting flow texture, with phenocrysts of quartz and alkali feldspar in a glassy to cryptocrystalline groundmass.

OBS

liparite: A synonym of rhyolite used by German and Soviet authors. Its name, given by Roth in 1861, is derived from the Lipari Island, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Not recommended usage; the much more widely used synonym rhyolite has priority by one year.

PHR

Mineralized rhyolite, unmineralized rhyolite.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
  • Tectonique
DEF

OBS

liparita: de isla de Lipari, Italia.

  • Vulcanology and Seismology
DEF

An extrusive rock containing both pyroclastic and lava-flow characteristics, so that it is considered to be an intermediate form between a lava flow and a welded-tuff type of ignimbrite.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Volcanologie et sismologie
DEF

English

Subject field(s)

DEF

A texture characterized by a wavy or swirling pattern in which platy or prismatic minerals are oriented along planes of lamellar flowage or in flow lines in fine-grained and glassy igneous rocks.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
CONT
