The National Occupational Classification (NOC) replaces Canada's previous occupational classification systems, the Canadian Classification and Dictionary of Occupations (CCDO) and the closely-related 1980 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) of Statistics Canada. The NOC presents a new structure for analyzing and understanding the labour market and reflects occupational changes that have taken place over the past two decades. It also addresses problems with the CCDO that became evident when it was used for economic analysis. For example, in the NOC, occupations that encompass a wide range of skill levels are not classified together in the same unit group as they are in the CCDO. 5, record 4, English, - National%20Occupational%20Classification

1, record 17, French, - Conseil%20canadien%20de%20la%20sant%C3%A9%20et%20de%20la%20vie%20active%20au%20travail

Secondary metabolites have no recognizable function in the physiology of the producing organism. The antibiotic function, for example, is usually derived from compounds excreted too late in the producing organism's life cycle to confer any ecological advantage. There are, however, a few secondary metabolites which may have some physiological significance to the producing organism. Commercially, the most important secondary metabolites are the antibiotics. Of these, penicillin is produced in the greatest quantity, at a rate of 107 kg per annum. Other important antibiotics produced by fermentation are the aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, polyenes, non-polyene macrolides and the tetracyclines. Toxins and alkaloids account for the remainder of the secondary metabolites of industrial importance. Secondary metabolite is not formed as a direct result of the metabolism that keeps the cells alive. Hence the accumulation of a secondary metabolite in a reactor vessel lags behind the growth of the cells that produce it. 2, record 23, English, - secondary%20metabolite

A real difference in pathogenicity between HIV-1 and HIV-2 could be significant, and it would be important to determine its molecular basis. The two viruses infect the same populations of cells, binding the same CD4 receptor, but there are some differences in their genetic material and therefore in proteins. One of the most obvious is the presence in HIV-1 of the vpu gene, which is absent in HIV-(and in SIV, for that matter). Perhaps the product of this gene, a small 16-kilodalton peptide, enpathogenicity. Similarly, HIV-2 and SIV contain the vpx gene; HIV-1 does not. If this gene's 12-kilodalton product somehow slows the proliferation or spread of the virus or reduces its ability cells, that too could help to explain why HIV-2 and SIV appear to be less regularly pathogenic than HIV-1. 1, record 26, English, - vpx%20gene

4, record 32, French, - carboxyle

Tree structures such as the region quadtree ... enable the dynamic and hierarchical partitioning of a (raster) data space as opposed to the static partitioning provided by the previous concepts. Most documented applications of region quadtrees on raster data (e.g. (Worboys, 1995), (Samet, 1990)) use the quadtree structure for encoding the raster data down to the level of individual raster cells or pixels. In this approach simple attribute values (e.g. colour values) are assigned to individual leaf nodes. Instead of simple values, leaf nodes could also hold pointers to more complex information, such as binary data strings. This approach allows the region quadtree to be used as the basis for a dynamic variable-size tiling approach. The criteria determining the depth of the quadtree could either be the spatial dimensions of the smallest tile or the maximum amount of data to be stored for an individual tile. 3, record 43, English, - quadtree%20structure

The Extendible Support Structure (ESS) deploys and supports the SAR antenna panels in its mission configuration. The ESS assembly consists of an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), a drive mechanism assembly, and two identical independently-deployable wing assemblies. Each wing includes a deployment mechanism, a truss structure supporting two SAR antenna panels, and a variety of sensors. The ESS subsystem also includes command and telemetry to control and monitor the ESS prior to and during deployment. During launch, the ESS is supported by the SAR antenna panels which are restrained against the Spacecraft Support Structure by Antenna Tie-Downs at six locations per wing. Deployment of the ESS is initiated by a ground command sometime after the release of the antenna tie-downs. Following deployment, the ESS is capable of supporting the SAR antenna panels such that the peak-to-peak deviation due to thermo-elastic distortion is not greater than 1.1 mm over the entire antenna surface. 4, record 63, English, - extendible%20support%20structure

A carbocation (real or hypothetical) in which there are two (or more) carbon atoms that could in alternative Lewis formulae be designated as carbenium centres but which is instead represented by a structure in which a group (a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon residue, possibly with substituents in non-involved positions) bridges these potential carbenium centres. A rectangular array of horizontal and vertical input or output leads with diode or correed crosspoints at the intersection, used as a means of switching from any input to any output. (SMICO, 71: 238) In circuit switching at least, the matrix has proven to be the most difficult section to reduce to electronics partly because of the mass of contacts that is represented, but also because the best electronic device is not as good a switch point as are metallic contacts.
