CONT

There are two main types of pressurized structure but really unambiguous descriptions of them do not yet exist: (a) those that are held up by ribs or inflated "tyres" and therefore do not need an air lock to allow inward or outward access; (b) those that do need an air lock, have no inflated ribs and therefore must be held up by an internal air pressure slightly above atmospheric .... The ribbed structures are called "air inflated" and the non-ribbed ones "air supported".

CONT

DEF

A structure held up by a slight excess of internal air pressure above the air pressure in the atmosphere outside.

DEF

A structure in which gas or air pressure differentials control and ensure stability of form.

CONT

... in Pneumatic Architecture structural stability is the product of the release of internal environmental energy (air or gas pressure) within a membrane or bag (generally made of PVC coated nylon). Pneumatic Architecture is therefore a sub-category of pressurized construction (water or other liquids can also be used to pressurize). Three main types of Pneumatic structures are identified: air-inflated, air-supported, and air-controlled.

OBS

Pneumatics can be sub-divided into the two main categories of air-stabilised structures and air-controlled structures ... Air -stabilised construction can be further sub-divided into two distinct classes of structure: single wall air-supported and dual wall air-inflated structures ...

CONT

CONT

Air-inflated enclosures are completely supported by pressurized air entrapped within membranes. There are two main types, inflated-rib structures and inflated dual-wall structures.... In inflated dual walled construction, pressurized air is trapped between two concentric membranes. The shape of the inner membrane is maintained by suspending it from the outer one.

CONT

Air-inflated enclosures are completely supported by pressurized air entrapped within membranes. There are two main types, inflated-rib structures and inflated dual-wall structures. In inflated-rib construction, the membrane enclosure is supported by a framework of air-pressurized tubes, which serve much like arch ribs in thin-shell construction.
