Hay dos tipos de sarro, el que se sitúa sobre la encía y el que se introduce debajo de ésta. En este segundo caso su eliminación se realiza mediante una técnica llamada "curetaje" o raspado periodontal. La mayor parte se elimina con un aparato de ultrasonidos, y en el caso de los raspados periodontales, con un instrumento manual llamado "cureta". Las manchas se pueden quitar con el primero, con cepillos rotatorios accionados por el torno o con un chorro de bicarbonato que es ligeramente abrasivo.
