What is a "kitchen midden?" The first human group to arrive in a new land first had to find a protected dry spot with easy access to fresh water and food resources before it could settle down. Next to the village but more or less removed from the living area, a rubbish dump developed (bones from consumed animals, shells, etc). The dump grew, generation after generation, century after century, at a rate that has been estimated very roughly at around 20 cm (8 inches) per century. The little hill soon grows big enough to provide a convenient platform for a small village at its top. With people continuing to produce refuse at the top, the hill keeps growing, but perhaps at a slower rate. 5, record 7, English, - kitchen%20midden

Drop-off depots vary widely in terms of their level of sophistication. At the lowest end of the spectrum are depots that consist of a prepared pad where materials are dumped in a single, large pile. At the opposite end of the spectrum are facilities with paved areas that contain designated containers or bunkers for different materials (e.g., grass and leaves, shrubs and branches, large branches, and logs and stumps), and which have specific traffic flow patterns. Passive Aeration Windrow Composting. ... PAWS [Passively Aerated Windrow System] has two essential features, passive aeration and envelopment [...] The air in the middle of a compost pile or windrow is warmed up by the heat generated by oxidation of the waste by the decomposer organisms. Warm air naturally rises upwards and outwards of the composting mass. As nature abhors vacuum, the warm air is replaced by cooler air mostly from or through other parts of the compost, setting up a mostly internal circulation until the air is almost uniformly warm and oxygen-deficient thus creating anaerobic pockets that generate malodours. 3, record 63, English, - passive%20windrow%20composting

4, record 76, French, - racleur

Diesel and electric loaders of the LHD (load-haul-dump) variety are high in productivity and have greater flexibility and lower maintenance costs than rail systems ... Today's LHDs are long, low-profile units with four-wheel drive and equal speed in forward and reverse directions. They have center articulation for good tracking and maneuverability on the tight turns found underground. Bucket linkages are usually simplified, with only one bucket cylinder on small-capacity models. Brake systems are generally all-hydraulic, and power drive to all four wheels is through a torque converter with full powershift transmission. Bucket capacities range from 1 to 15 cu yd. 7, record 85, English, - load%2Dhaul%2Ddump
