Après une charge en glucose ou un repas : du glucose apparaît dans le sang en provenance du tube digestif. Il entraîne une élévation de la glycémie elle-même responsable d’une élévation de l'insulinémie. Cette dernière va :-d’une part réduire la production de glucose par le foie(inhibition de la glycogénolyse et de la néoglucogénèse)-d’autre part faciliter le captage et l'utilisation par les tissus insulino-dépendants(muscles et tissus adipeux). Ces deux phénomènes concourent à corriger l'hyperglycémie et à ramener le taux de glucose sanguin à sa valeur de départ.
