Rate of exchange set by the issuing bank of a currency that fixes the limits of variation of that currency within a given day. The issuing bank commits itself to buying all currencies offered at the purchase intervention price and to sell to all buyers at the sale intervention price. In some cases the intervention price is fixed for only one currency (dollar), all other currencies being fixed in relation to this. It is characteristic of an intervened market.

In the case of a fixed exchange rate, the government undertakes to buy and sell foreign exchange to maintain the exchange rate of the Canadian dollar within fixed limits.
