The subject of mountain meteorology is connected with the broader fields of ecology and geology in several ways. Many of the Earth's deserts are caused by the barrier effects of mountain ranges. Paradoxically, erosion is also involved in building individual or adjoining aeolian dunes such as parabolic dunes through a deflation process in hilly sandy landscapes fixed by vegetation cover. ... what makes some extratropical cyclones produce catastrophically damaging winds. ... [Keith Browning and Pete Clark] have identified a mesoscale flow which they call the Sting Jet. It originates in the cloud head of a rapidly deepening cyclone and gathers speed as it descends towards the tip of the cloud head when it begins to hook around the cyclone centre ... The Sting Jet was first identified observationally from a reanalysis of the Great Storm of October 1987 where the damaging winds were shown to be emanating from the evaporating tip of the hooked cloud head. It has since been reproduced in high-resolution runs with the mesoscale version of the Unified Model. The Sting Jet is distinct from the usual strong-wind region associated with the warm conveyor belt and main cold front. There are indications that conditional symmetric instability and evaporation both play a role in its formation but the importance of these processes remains to be quantified. 4, record 31, English, - sting%20jet

Sting jets occur in cyclones when there is a dramatic fall in the barometric pressure. ... The sting jet is born at an altitude of three miles, within layers of ascending moist air. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combines the principles of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and can be performed on either type of instrument. Like TEM [transmission electron microscopy], STEM requires very thin samples and looks primarily at beam electrons transmitted by the sample. One of its principal advantages over TEM is in enabling the use of other signals that cannot be spatially correlated in TEM, including secondary electrons, scattered beam electrons, characteristic X-rays, and electron energy loss. Like SEM [scanning electron microscopy], the STEM technique scans a very finely focused beam of electrons across the sample in a raster pattern. Interactions between the beam electrons and sample atoms generate a serial signal stream, which is correlated with beam position to build a virtual image in which the signal level at any location in the sample is represented by the gray level at the corresponding location in the image. Its primary advantage over conventional SEM imaging is the improvement in spatial resolution. 3, record 42, English, - scanning%20transmission%20electron%20microscopy

The term "transient" snowline is referred to as the boundary between a snow-covered surface and a bare surface at any given time ... The transient snowline may reside on the ground as well as on the surface of a glacier. It is continuously changing, being near sea level during winter in some locations, or on the highest mountain slopes in the summer. The final height of the transient snowline at the end of the melting season will vary from year to year depending on changes in precipitation and temperatures. Parent material, in soil science, means the underlying geological material (generally bedrock or a superficial or drift deposit) in which soil horizons form. Soils typically get a great deal of structure and minerals from their parent material. Parent materials are made up of consolidated or unconsolidated mineral material that has undergone some degree of physical or chemical weathering. ... Parent material is classified by its last means of transport. So material that was transported to a location by glacier, then deposited elsewhere by streams, that material is classified as stream transported parent material, or fluvial parent material. Glacial till refers to material dragged with a moving ice sheet. Because it is not transported with liquid water, the material is not sorted by size. 3, record 64, English, - parent%20material

The rock from which soil is formed is called parent material. The main types are: eolian, glacial till, glacial outwash, alluvium, lacustrine parent material and residual parent material, or bedrock. 5, record 64, French, - mat%C3%A9riau%20parental

Note that if were making a geologic map, we could draw a line on the map that separates the pelitic rocks containing only Pyrophyllite from those containing Kyanite + Quartz. Such a line (a surface in 3 dimensions) is called an isograd (iso - same, grad - grade). In this case, since it represents the first appearance of Kyanite, we call it the Kyanite Isograd ... If we continue walking along the direction that T & P increased in these rocks during metamorphism, we would eventually come to another place where in the pelitic rocks the mineral assemblage changes. This time the change is from Kyanite + Quartz to Sillimanite + Quartz. Again, we can draw a line on the map that indicates this change in mineral assemblage, this time calling it the Sillimanite Isograd. Just like before, this represents the point on the phase diagram, above, where the geothermal gradient intersected the boundary for the reaction ... Because the sandstone and the limestone do not contain Kyanite, the isograd does not appear in these rocks, but we can still extrapolate its position across the map or outcrop. 3, record 82, English, - sillimanite%20isograd

4, record 91, French, - thermom%C3%A8tre%20%C3%A0%20renversement
