TOPOGRAPHIE MONTAGNE [2 records]

Record 1 2022-06-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
DEF

The study of weather phenomena associated with moutains or topographically complex areas.

CONT

The subject of mountain meteorology is connected with the broader fields of ecology and geology in several ways. Many of the Earth's deserts are caused by the barrier effects of mountain ranges. Rain forests often occur on windward mountain slopes. Local ocean circulations are influenced by the cold air reaching the sea through mountain passes, and by the freshwater input to the oceans, channeled by the terrain.

French

Domaine(s)

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
CONT

Terrain can influence the transport and diffusion of hazardous gases to a critical degree, especially for heavier-than-air gases (such as chlorine). Channelling of winds along valleys can lead to transport of gases with restricted lateral diffusion for considerable distances. In light winds, the slope of terrain has a significant influence on local airflow.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
  • Études et analyses environnementales
CONT
