On distingue deux sortes de relaxations : Relaxation spin-milieu ou spin-réseau, dite relaxation longitudinale. Ce phénomène longitudinal est provoqué par les molécules qui subissent un mouvement de rotation, de vibration, de translation et par les propriétés magnétiques des noyaux. L'énergie de translation est transférée au réseau du milieu. Relaxation spin-spin ou relaxation transversale. La spectrométrie Mössbauer est une méthode permettant de déterminer le degré d’oxydation et l'environnement d’éléments chimiques [Un] échantillon est bombardé par un rayonnement gamma(photons) dont on fait varier l'énergie autour d’une énergie de transition nucléaire […] Un détecteur se trouve derrière l'échantillon. Lorsque l'énergie du rayonnement incident correspond à l'énergie de transition électronique, le rayonnement est absorbé, et donc l'intensité collectée est faible. Il s’agit donc d’une spectrométrie d’absorption.
