Turbidimetric analysis. An analytical method based on the measurement of the attenuation of transmitted light by a solution containing a finely divided precipitate. There is a direct relationship between the amount of light attenuated and the amount of material in suspension. Either visual comparison with known standards or photoelectric detection is used to measure the amount of light transmitted by the turbid solutions ... Plus l'échantillon est turbide et plus la hauteur d’eau nécessaire est faible. [...] Pour calibrer le tube, JACKSON a utilisé initialement une suspension de silice colloïdale, une unité correspondant à 1 mg/l de silice(unité JACKSON ou u. T. J.).

Les unités [de turbidité] généralement employées proviennent de la normalisation ASTM; les trois unités suivantes sont considérées comme comparables : unité J.T.U. (Jackson Turbidity Units), unité F.T.U. (Formazine Turbidity Units), unité N.T.U. (Nephelometric Turbidity Units).
