A circular pattern of air current created by the movement of an airfoil through the air when the airfoil is generating lift. 4, record 1, English, - wing%2Dtip%20vortex
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
As an airfoil moves through the atmosphere in sustained flight, an area of high pressure is created beneath it and an area of low pressure is created above it. The air flowing from the high-pressure area to the low-pressure area around and about the tips of the airfoil tends to roll up into two rapidly rotating vortices, cylindrical in shape. These vortices are the predominant parts of aircraft wake turbulence and their rotational force is dependent upon the wing loading, gross weight, and speed of the generating aircraft. The vortices from medium to heavy aircraft can be of extremely high velocity and hazardous to smaller aircraft. 4, record 1, English, - wing%2Dtip%20vortex

5, record 1, French, - tourbillon%20en%20bout%20d%27aile
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
5, record 1, French, - tourbillon%20en%20bout%20d%27aile

The vortex circulation is outward, upward and around the wing tips when viewed from either ahead or behind the aircraft. Tests with large aircraft have shown that the vortices remain spaced a bit less than a wingspan apart, drifting with the wind, at altitudes greater than a wingspan from the ground. In view of this, if persistent vortex turbulence is encountered, a slight change of altitude and lateral position (preferably upwind) will provide a flight path clear of the turbulence. 3, record 5, English, - vortex%20turbulence

1, record 6, French, - r%C3%A9gime%20bip%C3%A9riodique
