In the aftermath of the financial crises in the late 1990s, the G20 was created in 1999 to strengthen policy coordination between its members, promote financial stability, and modernize the international financial architecture.

Cette crise avait mis en évidence la nécessité d’intégrer les grands pays émergents dans les discussions multilatérales sur l’économie et la stabilité financière.
