McLuhan [...] part de la négation de la formule traditionnelle(qui suppose que les moyens de communication entre l'émetteur et le récepteur ne sont que des éléments neutres) pour affirmer que «le média constitue le message». Pour lui le mode de transmission de la culture la transforme. Il classe les médias en médias «chauds»(imprimés, radio, cinéma, photographie) fortement expressifs et sollicitant peu de participation de leurs destinataires et en médias «froids»(la parole, téléphone, télévision) simplement suggestifs et enclins à provoquer la participation créatrice. Ces théories lui permirent de définir trois âges pour l'histoire de l'humanité, selon les modes de communication. En premier, «la vie tribale» dominée par la parole. Le deuxième, «la Galaxie Gutenberg», où triompha l'imprimé et où l'amarre de toute action, de toute parole, était le sujet : analytique et rationnel.
