Reverse engineering is a technique [used for] understanding the structure of a semiconductor device and its functions. In case of an ASIC [application specific integrated circuit] or a custom IC [integrated circuit], that means extracting information about the location of all the transistors and interconnections. In order to succeed, a general knowledge of IC and VLSI [very large scale integration] design is required. All the layers formed during chip fabrication are removed one by one in reverse order and photographed to determine the internal structure of the chip. 2, record 2, English, - reverse%20engineering

Deletions are usually caused by recombination between directly repeated sequences in different locations of the DNA. In recombination, the strands of two DNA molecules are broken and rejoined in new combinations—hence the name recombination ... Homologous recombination occurs at sites of identical sequences in the two DNAs because the strands of the two DNAs must be complementary to each other to initiate recombination. This ensures that the recombination usually occurs at the same place in the two DNAs, where their sequences are the same. However, sometimes similar or identical sequences exist in more than one location in the DNA, and recombination can sometimes mistakenly occur between these two different locations. Such recombination is called ectopic recombination (Greek for out of place) because it is occurring outside the correct place. 2, record 4, English, - ectopic%20recombination

3, record 4, French, - recombinaison%20ectopique

Robotic grasping and manipulation in unknown environments is made difficult by several factors. ... To make robots cheaper, lighter, and safer, precision in the accuracy of end-effector position is often sacrificed. This introduces uncertainty in the position of the gripper relative to the object. Robotic grasping theory must account for such uncertainty in order to provide robust and reliable grasping in unstructured environments. One method for dealing with such uncertainty is robotic caging. Unlike an immobilizing grasp, in which the robotic hand grasps an object so as to prevent all motion of the object relative to the hand, a caging grasp only prevents the object from escaping through the fingers, while allowing some motion of the object relative to the hand. 1, record 9, English, - robotic%20caging

Record number: 18, Textual support number: 1 CONT

[A] condition in which a second concussion occurs before a first concussion has properly healed, causing rapid and severe brain swelling and often catastrophic results. 1, record 58, English, - second%20impact%20syndrome
Record number: 58, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Second impact syndrome can result from even a very mild concussion that occurs days or weeks after the initial concussion. What is Second Impact Syndrome? In patients who sustain a second concussion when the first one has not fully healed, the brain loses its ability to auto regulate intracranial and cerebral perfusion pressure. This may lead to cerebral edema (severe swelling of the brain) and possible brain herniation. Loss of consciousness after the initial injury followed by secondary brain damage creates ionic fluxes, acute metabolic changes, and cerebral blood flow alterations. All of these characteristics enhance the vulnerability of the brain and greatly increase the risk of death, even if the second injury was far less intense. 1, record 58, English, - second%20impact%20syndrome

Since transgenic mice are being used to analyse somatic and germinal mutation rates in vivo, it is of interest to know to what extent these mice are normal or abnormal in any way. During experiments designed to compare the mutational response of the trasgene and an endogenous gene, Big Blue mice hemizygous for the transgene were bred to create a hybrid mouse in which the comparisons could be made.

4, record 78, French, - %C3%A9l%C3%A9ment

Studies of the Antarctic ozone hole have shown that polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) play an important role in the depletion of ozone. The PSCs contribute to ozone depletion by cycling chlorine from inactive "reservoir" species such as ClONO2 and HCl into reactive chlorine atoms. Although it is known that one type of PSC particle (Type Ia) contains nitric acid and water in a crystalline form, the composition and formation mechanism of these particles is not yet known. We measured the crystallization rates of nitric acid trihydrate (NAT) and nitric acid dihydrate (NAD) to determine the amount of time which would be required for 3:1 and 2:1 water:nitric acid solutions to freeze to NAT and NAD, respectively, under stratospheric conditions. 3, record 79, English, - nitric%20acid%20trihydrate

Common industry usage substitutes the term "tamper-evident" for the term "tamper-resistant" .... The FDA has not objected to this substitution, nor has it made any official recognition of it as a synonymous term .... [It] seems likely that use of both terms will continue for some time. The core is comprised of two coarsening-upwards sequences separated by a conglomeratic lag. Each coarsening-upward cycle begins with interbedded sandstones and shales and is sharply overlain by low angle to trough cross-bedded sandstones. ... The basal portion of each coarsening-upwards cycle is typified by a "laminated-scrambled" texture with interbedded laminated hummocky cross-stratified sandstone beds and burrowed (scrambled) silty shales. 3, record 95, English, - coarsening%2Dupward%20cycle

When one hears the word "Crown," one often thinks of the actual crown worn by a king or queen. However, the Crown of Canada refers to something quite different. This booklet [entitled: "A Crown of Maples"] discusses the institution of the Crown, how it has evolved and grown with the country over hundreds of years as a uniquely Canadian institution, and the significant role it plays in the daily life of Canada today. 2, record 97, English, - Crown%20in%20Canada

5, record 97, French, - Couronne%20au%20Canada
