The sport of yachting [now sailing] is included in the programme of the Olympic Games since 1896. ... One race per day in each event is held for four days. Spare days are then scheduled to allow the organizers the opportunity to catch up on any races postponed or abandoned because of poor weather. The final three races are held one per day after the scheduled spare days. Les premières courses eurent lieu en 1898 à Asnières et, dès 1903, les bateaux furent classés en racers (bateaux de course) et en cruisers (bateaux de croisière). À ces séries, on ajoute les runabouts, comprenant des bateaux de course soumis à certaines restrictions et confortablement équipés pour le tourisme. Mais, en compétition internationale, on distingue quatre types de séries, subdivisées selon la cylindrée du moteur, qui va de moins de 175 cm³ à plus de 7 000 cm³. Ce sont le hors-bord course, le hors-bord sport, l’en-bord course et l’en-bord sport. Il existe des compétitions de vitesse et des compétitions d’endurance (dont les Six Heures de Paris).
