Un autre procédé pour obtenir l'électroluminescence est l'effet Destriau. Il consiste à placer entre les deux armatures d’un condensateur, dont l'une est transparente, une poudre à base de semi-conducteurs 11-V1(ZnS et CdS), enrobée dans un liant isolant. L'application d’une tension aux plaques du condensateur entraîne une émission transitoire de lumière due à la recombinaison des paires électrons-trous créées par ionisation par choc. Ces dispositifs fonctionnent donc en courant alternatif.
