aileron : Sur un avion, les ailerons sont des gouvernes agissant en sens opposé(l'une monte quand l'autre descend et inversement) et servant à produire un mouvement de roulis. Ils sont généralement situés à l'extrémité de l'aile car le bras de levier étant plus grand, l'effet recherché est d’autant plus grand. Sur les avions de ligne de type Boeing ou Airbus il existe, en plus des ailerons classiques en bout d’aile(utilisés aux basses vitesses), des ailerons situés près de l'emplanture utilisés aux grandes vitesses pour réduire les efforts de torsion dans l'aile. L'action des ailerons peut être complétée par celle des spoilers ou des aérofreins utilisés de façon non symétrique.

The so-called tipvanes are small auxiliary wings mounted at the top of the windmill blades. The wing are oriented such that their leading edge approximately perpendicular to the relative local flow velocity, whereas their angle of attack with respect to the relative velocity causes a lift in the direction of the windmill axis. (GHRA-1,1977,,,E3-34).
