When a tree seed germinates, the first (primary) root grows down in the soil in response to gravity. Secondary roots then branch off horizontally, with subsequent branching into tertiary roots, etc. Absorption of water and mineral nutrients is the function of the very fine, non-woody roots (the feeder roots). With continued growth, each root will lose its ability for absorption. These larger woody roots then function as the transport system for water and nutrients from the new feeder roots to the stem. They are also the tree's system of anchorage and a food storage area. The resulting system thus consists of several main transport roots that extend radically and horizontally from the tree base and divide into ever smaller roots, each ending in a dense mass of fine feeder roots. 2, record 2, English, - feeder%20roots

An oceanographic mooring consists of a long line or cable with an anchor at one end, a float at the other, and instruments attached to the line in between or to a float at the surface. These allow researchers to measure such properties as water velocity, salinity, and temperature in several places and for long periods of time. The main caisson or column rising from the floating hull of a semi-submersible drilling unit to support the deck. Modern semi-submersible rigs have three, four, five or six stabilizer columns, sometimes separated by narrower intermediate columns which help to distribute the load. Stabilizer columns are made of large diameter tubes to give strength and stability to the structure when submerged or resting on the water. 1, record 95, English, - stabilizing%20column

In the USA, it has been standard practice to drive securing pins through overlaps in the geotextile filter, at 0.6 to 1.5 m centres, even if the joints are sewn or heat-bonded. With unbounded rip-rap on some sites, there is a tendency for the stone to move after placement as it settles into its final resting position. As this has been found to cause tears in the geotextile at the securing pins, it now appears safer to place the geotextile fairly loosely over the prepared surface, using the minimum possible number of securing pins. 1, record 97, English, - securing%20pin
