When a tree seed germinates, the first (primary) root grows down in the soil in response to gravity. Secondary roots then branch off horizontally, with subsequent branching into tertiary roots, etc. Absorption of water and mineral nutrients is the function of the very fine, non-woody roots (the feeder roots). With continued growth, each root will lose its ability for absorption. These larger woody roots then function as the transport system for water and nutrients from the new feeder roots to the stem. They are also the tree's system of anchorage and a food storage area. The resulting system thus consists of several main transport roots that extend radically and horizontally from the tree base and divide into ever smaller roots, each ending in a dense mass of fine feeder roots. 2, record 1, English, - feeder%20roots

1, record 1, French, - racine%20non%20ligneuse

In the USA, it has been standard practice to drive securing pins through overlaps in the geotextile filter, at 0.6 to 1.5 m centres, even if the joints are sewn or heat-bonded. With unbounded rip-rap on some sites, there is a tendency for the stone to move after placement as it settles into its final resting position. As this has been found to cause tears in the geotextile at the securing pins, it now appears safer to place the geotextile fairly loosely over the prepared surface, using the minimum possible number of securing pins. 1, record 6, English, - securing%20pin

From its close orbit above the tiny nucleus, Rosetta will be able to send back the most detailed images and information ever obtained of a comet. When a suitable landing site has been chosen, about a month after global mapping starts, the orbiter will release a 100 kg lander onto the comet's solid surface. Touchdown must be quite slow - less than one metre per second - to allow for the almost negligible gravitational pull of the tiny nucleus. In order to ensure that the lander does not bounce and disappear into space, an anchoring harpoon will be fired into the surface immediately on impact. 2, record 20, English, - anchoring%20harpoon

Influence of geotextile deformability. A geotextile also provides interlocking of soil particles when it deforms to the shape of soil particles ... . This depends on several parameters: stiffness of the goetextile, size of the soil particles and of the gaps between them, and normal stress applied on the geotextile. Several measurements on nonwoven geotextiles show that a more flexible geotextile provides a slightly larger contact efficiency. ... a possible reason for a large contact efficiency is that, with a deformable material on one side, a flexible geotextile is able to deform to the shape of the coarse particles on the other side. 1, record 29, English, - geotextile%20deformability
