Avec le temps, l'habitude de porter le pavillon à la corne s’est étendue à tous les navires, même à moteur. L'étiquette veut dès lors que l'on transfère ce pavillon au couronnement dès que la première amarre est à terre ou que l'ancre touche le fond. De nos jours, on retrouve des traces de cette habitude à la marine de guerre, bien que le pavillon y soit aujourd’hui transféré à la poupe dès l'entrée dans les eaux territoriales.
