Soon a more sturdy doctrine was fashioned. It was called "last clear chance", "last opportunity" or "ultimate negligence". The seminal case was Davies v. Mann where the plaintiff negligently left his donkey on the highway with its legs tied. The defendant drove his wagon and horses negligently into the animal and killed it. Liability was imposed on the defendant, despite the contributory negligence of the plaintiff, because according to Lord Abinger the defendant might have avoided the animal with proper care. The case was later explained on the ground that the defendant was held totally responsible because he had the "last opportunity of avoiding the accident". Another rationale of the case rested on causation theory; where the defendant could have avoided the accident, he, and not the plaintiff, was the sole cause of it. ... The best explanation of the last clear chance theory was that it was a technique for imposing liability on the defendant, when his negligence was relatively greater than the plaintiff's. 1, record 24, English, - last%20clear%20chance

Once the idea of rotary movement for grinding evolved, it was not long before the Romans invented the rotary mill, which quickly replaced the lever mill. Rotary mills, both animal driven and hand powered, came into use about 2,300 years ago and represented a major advance in the development of milling machinery. The hand powered rotary mills, known as querns, superseded saddlestones in the home and were widely used until the end of the nineteenth century. To this day, the quern is a popular piece of household equipment in many developing nations where home milling is still practised. 1, record 46, English, - rotary%20mill

1, record 46, French, - meule%20rotative

Early milling tools were small implements used exclusively in the home to provide for one family's needs. It wasn't until about 3,000 years ago that people began to make larger saddlestones with increased output. The improved equipment meant that one person was able to produce more than their own family's needs; thus the professional miller was born. The first commercial establishments were combination mill-bakeries, the end product being leavened bread, for by this time the use of fermenting agents to aerate the flat clay-like cakes had also been discovered. 1, record 47, English, - saddlestone

1, record 47, French, - meule%20en%20dos%20d%26rsquo%3B%C3%A2ne

Canine Distemper Virus in the Serengeti Lion (Panthera Leo). This paper was sparked off by Dr Thompson, who had received a video taken by Professor Ray Hilborn while in Tanzania, featuring a lion in the 'grand mal' stage of distemper. The unfortunate individual featured in the video was one of about 1,000 lions struck by an outbreak of the disease on the Serengeti plain, Africa in 1993-94. This paper is basically a collection of abstracts and references about the disease in the lion (Panthera leo), accompanied by background knowledge, and a video showing the spectacular epileptiform fits suffered by this particular lion. It should be noted that distemper fits in other species are very similar.
