Another increasingly popular type of anemometer is the propeller anemometer. This anemometer is simply a very small two- or three-blade propeller, calibrated so that the revolutions per minute (rpm) corresponds to specific wind speeds. The gyro, of an attitude indicator that is driven by a vacuum system, requires 4 or more inches of mercury vacuum to operate and 5 minutes to get up to operational speed. An attitude indicator that is electrically driven is operational almost immediately.

Air pressure differential is the principle on which the vacuum driven gyro instruments operate. A vacuum pump run by the airplane engine creates a partial vacuum in the system. A filtered air inlet upstream of the gyros allows air to rush into the system causing the gyro wheels to spin.

Vane anemometer. This portable instrument is used to measure low wind speeds and airspeeds in large ducts. It consists of a number of vanes radiating from a common shaft and set to rotate when facing the wind; a guard ring surrounds the vanes. The vanes operate a counter to indicate the number of rotations, which when timed with a stop-watch serve to determine the speed. The parts are made of lightweight materials; friction is kept low to obtain reliable measurements.
