In knowledge communication systems, there is a special module, often called the expert, that contains a representation of the knowledge to be communicated. ... The expert module fulfils a double function. On the one hand, it acts as the source for the knowledge to be presented. This includes generating explanations and responses to the student as well as tasks and questions. On the other hand, the expert module serves as a standard for evaluating the student's performance. For this function, it must be able to generate solutions to problems in the same context as the student does so that their respective answers can be compared.

People are taught to replace passive and aggressive communication styles with clear communications that include specific requests, but are not hostile. Assertiveness techniques and exercises are designed to teach individuals to ask for what they want and to refuse requests from others without feeling guilty and to teach people to express their feelings directly and honestly.

During the educational process there are a multitude of strategies that educators may employ in order to maximize learning among their pupils. For symbolic problem-solving skills (such as mathematics), a particularly effective technique is to have students study worked-out example problems and unworked practice problems. Research shows that students who explain parts of worked examples to themselves learn more effectively than students who do not. This is called the self-explanation effect.
