ARME ANTI-SATELLITE [8 records]

Record 1 2020-07-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weapon Systems
  • Space Warfare
DEF

A weapon designed to be used against artificial satellites.

CONT

The Air Force has plans for a variety of weapons to protect U.S. satellites, and to destroy or disable enemy satellites. They are known collectively as anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons. Some would be based in space. Others would be on the ground, on ships, or mounted on airplanes. Some would be directed energy weapons (lasers or high-powered microwaves). Some would have explosive warheads, and some would destroy a target by running into it.

OBS

anti-satellite weapon; ASAT weapon: terms extracted from the "Disarmament and Peace Keeping" glossary with the permission of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Systèmes d'armes
  • Guerre spatiale
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Space Weapons
CONT

... the US Army began in 1989 a programme to develop a direct ascent kinetic energy ASAT [antisatellite weapon] (KE-ASAT). The main component is a kinetic kill vehicle (KKV) that would be launched by rocket booster to strike and put a hostile satellite out of service.

OBS

KE-ASAT: kinetic energy antisatellite.

Key term(s)
  • kinetic energy antisatellite kill vehicle
  • kinetic energy anti-satellite kill vehicle

CONT
