La maîtrise du déplacement des atomes à l'unité a permis à D. Eigler de réaliser un commutateur «électrique», dont l'élément de commutation est un seul atome de xénon. Suivant que cet atome est adsorbé au pied d’une marche sur la surface de nickel ou sur l'apex de la pointe, l'intensité du courant tunnel varie respectivement de 13 nA à 91 nA. Il s’agit là du premier dispositif fabriqué à l'unité, dont une partie au moins est d’échelle subnanométrique. Il reste à intégrer tout le dispositif d’adressage de ce commutateur(dont le microscope à effet tunnel) sur un même circuit, à l'échelle du nanomètre.
