Il s’agit d’une diode à vide entourée d’un puissant aimant permanent. La cathode, au centre, émet des électrons qui sont attirés vers une anode concentrique lorsque cette dernière est portée à un potentiel positif. Or le champ magnétique fait dévier les électrons dont la trajectoire prend la forme d’une spirale... ce qui donne lieu à des oscillations. Aussi l'anode contient des cavités résonantes qui entretiennent les oscillations dans la bande des hyperfréquences. L'énergie qui en résulte, pouvant atteindre plusieurs mégawatts, est acheminée vers l'antenne à l'aide d’un réseau de guides d’ondes.
