The decision to seize the levers of constitutional power and dissolve the legislature and judicial bodies has produced what is known in Latin America as an auto-golpe, a self-coup. Its purpose is to consolidate the authority of someone already in power.

Auto-coup d’État perpétré au Guatemala le 25 mai 1993 par le président Jorge Serrano Elias. La presse écrite francophone utilise l’équivalent espagnol, soit «autogolpe».
