By "self-similarity" Mandelbrot means a repetition of detail at descending scales ...

CONT

The neural net may be thought of as responding to its own dynamics in exactly the same way as it responds to outside stimuli. This property may be thought of as a from of structural self-similarity, in which successive scales represent levels in a hierarchy of references. In the limit of an infinite net, one then has true self-similarity and thus, true self-reference.

OBS

When more than one scale factor is involved, the term self-affinity is used.

L’autosimilitude est parfois définie comme autosimilarité stricte ou linéaire, d’autres fois comme automorphisme exact. Un objet autosimilaire peut être conçu comme exactement semblable à lui-même. Certains ensembles fractals, tel le bidragon ou courbe des dragons jumeaux possèdent une homothétie interne. Les fractales peuvent donc être strictement autosimilaires (par exemple l’éponge de Menger ou le tapis de Sierpinski), statistiquement autosimilaires (par exemple les côtes dans les paysages fractals) ou encore conceptuellement autosimilaires (par exemple l’ensemble de Mandelbrot).
