Deux types de configuration [d’éoliennes] peuvent être rencontrés : les éoliennes «amont», sur lesquelles les pales sont situées du côté de la tour exposé au vent, et les éoliennes «aval» [...] Chaque configuration possède avantages et inconvénients : la formule «amont» requiert des pales rigides pour éviter tout risque de collision avec la tour alors que la configuration «aval» autorise l'utilisation de rotors plus flexibles. Par ailleurs, dans le cas d’une machine «amont», l'écoulement de l'air sur les pales est peu perturbé par la présence de la tour. L'effet de masque est plus important dans le cas d’une machine «aval».
