The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal (or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal," but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix" (peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street," now "la rue Saint-Jacques," became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada." In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002, the cities of Boucher ... 2, record 44, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

The Aboriginal Summer Student Program was a joint effort of the Canadian Forest Service (CFS) and Corporate Services Sector of Natural Resources Canada. It was designed to provide Aboriginal students with practical, meaningful and challenging summer employment that would expose them to the work accomplished throughout the CFS. The program provided Natural Resources Canada with a valuable opportunity to strengthen the department's relationship with the Aboriginal community. It not only benefited the students by providing them with practical and challenging employment; it also helped managers increase their awareness and appreciation of the needs, abilities and culture of Aboriginal peoples. As such, the real success of this program was in uniting the Aboriginal community and the forest community at the local level, and in highlighting the scientific aspects of forestry. 1, record 54, English, - Aboriginal%20Summer%20Student%20Program

1, record 54, French, - Programme%20d%26rsquo%3Bemploi%20d%26rsquo%3B%C3%A9t%C3%A9%20pour%20%C3%A9tudiants%20autochtones

The Assembly of First Nations exists to fulfill the goal of correcting these past injustices and to enhance the rightful position of the First Nations Peoples in Canada's future. Just as the people of the First Nations across Canada were becoming familiar with the NIB and its role in serving the Status Aboriginal people, an important transition in the structure of the secretariat was being discussed and eventually the Chiefs wanted to develop an organization which was truly representative and accountable to their community members, thus the NIB made the transition to becoming the Assembly of First Nations in 1982. 3, record 77, English, - Assembly%20of%20First%20Nations

The launch of APTN on September 1, 1999, represented a significant milestone for Aboriginal Peoples across Canada; for the first time in broadcast history, First Nations, Inuit and Metis people have the opportunity to share their stories with the rest of the world on a national television network dedicated to Aboriginal programming. Through documentaries, news magazines, dramas, entertainment specials, children's series, cooking shows and education programs, APTN offers all Canadians a window into the remarkably diverse worlds of Indigenous peoples in Canada and throughout the world. 1, record 80, English, - Aboriginal%20Peoples%20Television%20Network

1, record 92, French, - Programme%20de%20formation%20d%26rsquo%3Bemploi%20d%26rsquo%3B%C3%A9t%C3%A9%20pour%20%C3%A9tudiants%28e%29%20autochtones

In order to help accelerate the benefits that Canadians can realize from information technologies, the Government of Canada created a blue ribbon panel of experts to advise on how Canada can take a leading role in developing "smart communities." Upon the panel's recommendations, the government has committed to establishing a Smart Community demonstration project in each province, the North and an Aboriginal community by the year 2000. The federal government envisions Smart Communities as communities that use information technology in new and innovative ways to empower their residents, institutions and region as a whole. Smart Communities make the most of the opportunities that new technologies afford - for better health care delivery, for better education and training, and for growing businesses. The project is administered by Industry Canada. 1, record 97, English, - Smart%20Communities
