Évaporateurs. La concentration de la liqueur noire se fait dans des évaporateurs, dont il existe divers types : à effets multiples(multiple-effect), à circulation forcée(forced-circulation), à compression de vapeur(vapor-compression), à contact direct(direct-contact, direct-heat), etc. [...] Le surconcentrateur(cascade evaporator) est un autre type d’évaporateur à contact direct. Il est constitué par un tambour à axe horizontal tournant dans un bac fermé, relié à la sortie des fumées de la chaudière. Le tambour comporte un grand nombre de tubes horizontaux maintenus entre deux flasques. La partie inférieure du tambour plonge dans la liqueur à concentrer; les tubes s’enrobent de liqueur visqueuse et, en émergeant, passent dans le courant de fumées chaudes. Ces dernières font s’évaporer une partie de l'eau de la liqueur et abandonnent les plus grosses particules de sel qu'elles transportent.
