The insecticidal nature of [Bacillus thuringiensis] is attributed to crystal-like proteins that are produced by Bt cells during the spore-forming stage of its life cycle. The crystal protein in Bt kills insects by binding to and disrupting the midgut (stomach) membranes. Susceptible insects will stop feeding within hours of ingesting Bt and will generally die within 2-5 days. The specificity of Bt lies in the fact that particular stomach enzymes (present only in certain insects) must activate the crystal proteins before they are considered toxic. Under normal conditions the crystal protein is insoluble (not active) and is therefore safe to humans, mammals and the majority of insects. 3, record 9, English, - insecticidal%20crystal%20protein

3, record 11, French, - g%C3%A8ne%20d%26rsquo%3Borigine%20bact%C3%A9rienne

Enzyme isolated from microorganisms. They can be classified into two forms. One is extracellular, excreted from microbial cells during culture, and the other is intracellular, remaining in the cells. Microbial enzymes are more useful than enzymes derived from plants or animals because of the great variety of catalytic activities available, because cheap, regular, abundant supplies of even quality can usually be developed, occasionally by surface culture but usually by the deep culture aerobic fermentation techniques widely used in the production of antibiotics; also because microbial enzymes are usually more stable than the corresponding plant and animal enzymes, and because microbial enzyme production is usually a more convenient and safer procedure than production from plant and animal sources. 3, record 19, English, - microbial%20enzyme

3, record 19, French, - enzyme%20microbienne
