Maintaining and promoting the growth of helpful bacteria, while destroying the harmful strains, is vital to health. If harmful bacteria grow in too great a proportion, serious consequences can arise. A number of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, colitis, diabetes, meningitis, thyroid disease and bowel cancer are throught to result from significantly altered bowel flora.

C’est ce second écosystème que nous prendrons comme exemple dans la suite. Bacillus thuringiensis : Cette bactérie, qui parasite plusieurs espèces de lépidoptères, peut être cultivée en grandes quantités et utilisée pour la fabrication d’une préparation insecticide efficace contre de nombreuses chenilles de lépidoptères, notamment les vers de la grappe, les phalènes hiémales, les hyponomeutes, la piéride du chou et la pyrale du mais. Ce produit biologique, très sélectif, a l'avantage d’éviter la destruction de la faune utile.
