Both the biofilm process and the activated sludge process are methods that use microorganisms to remove organic matter from sewage. In the activated sludge process, microorganisms grow in a suspended state, so the treatment system is also called a suspended growth system. In contrast, microorganisms in the biofilm process attach to the surface of certain substances, making the system an attached growth system. The biofilm process mainly includes biofilters, rotating biological contactors, and fluidized bed bioreactors. The basic principle of the biofilm process is to achieve contact between sewage and biofilm through their relative movement, enabling solid-liquid mass exchange. Organic matter undergoes biological oxidation within the biofilm, purifying the sewage. 3, record 1, English, - attached%20growth%20process

3, record 13, French, - g%C3%A8ne%20d%26rsquo%3Borigine%20bact%C3%A9rienne

The ability of certain restriction enzymes to recognize rather short, specific sequences of DNA as targets for cleavage opens a direct approach to gene structure. It is possible to proceed to determine the sequence of DNA between points that are sufficiently close together by suitable choice of points, regions can be connected into a sequence of the entire gene. The sequence of the DNA then can be compared with the sequence of the protein that the gene represents. This allows the regions corresponding to the protein to be delineated; and, by extending the sequence in either direction, the distance to the next gene can be determined. 2, record 26, English, - gene%20structure

The most important aspect of our cloning vectors is that they are based on the E. coli F-factor replicon. It allows for strict copy number control of the clones so that they are stably maintained at 1-2 copies per cell. The stability of the cloned DNA during propagation in E. coli host is substantially higher in lower-copy number vectors than in multi-copy counterparts. ... Bacterial leaf stripe (Pseudomonas syringae subsp. andropogonis) is widely distributed and destructive on many types of sorghums (grain, forage, and sweet or sorgo), sudangrass, and broomcorn as well as on several other related grasses. Long, narrow stripes (1/4 inch by 9 inches or more) form on the leaves. These stripes are initially water-soaked, irregular, and bounded by veins. These areas soon dry and turn brick red, dark purplish red, reddish brown, or tan-to-dark brown depending on the sorghum variety. The color is continuous throughout the lesion. Later, the stripes elongate and fuse to form irregular blotches that cover a large part of the leaf surface and extend into the leaf sheath. Stalks and floral structures may show similar but more restricted lesions. 2, record 57, English, - bacterial%20leaf%20stripe

Investigation has shown that this restriction was due to bacterial enzymes that recognize specific sites on a "foreign" viral DNA and cleave that DNA. To protect its own DNA the bacterial cell makes a modification enzyme that adds methyl groups to nucleotides constituting the recognition sites for the restriction endonuclease, making them resistant to cleavage (modification-restriction system). 2, record 68, English, - modification%2Drestriction%20system

Le traitement biologique ou secondaire. [...]

Gene trapping in murine embryonic stem cells is a proven method for the simultaneous identification and mutation of genes in the mouse. Gene trap vectors are designed to detect insertions within genes through the production of a fusion mRNA transcript, making the identification of the endogenous gene possible by 5' rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). Although the amplification of specific cDNAs can be achieved rapidly, cloning and screening of informative-sized cDNAs has proven to be time consuming. 1, record 91, English, - gene%20trap%20vector

1, record 95, French, - matrice%20d%26rsquo%3BADN
