Les microorganismes impliqués dans la biodégradation des hydrocarbures sont appelés hydrocarbonoclastiques. [Source : Le chargé de recherches sur la biodégradation des hydrocarbures à l’Institut de recherches en biotechnologie du CNRC]. Il a relevé cette phrase dans une revue française dont il n’a malheureusement pas été en mesure de nous communiquer le titre. Il nous a dit que d’autres termes étaient formés de la même manière, comme par exemple «acétoclastique» pour désigner les microorganismes qui dégradent les composés d’acétylène. Il nous a dit, aussi, qu’il est préférable d’utiliser «microorganisme» plutôt que «microbe», terme plutôt familier et dont la champ sémantique est trop restreint].

La formation de l’expression «hydrocarbonoclastique» nous laisse perplexe; il vaudrait peut-être mieux utiliser «hydrocarburoclaste», d’une part parce qu’on parle d’hydrocarbures et non d’«hydrocarbones» et que, d’autre part, le suffixe «clastique» n’apparaît pas dans le Grand dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse. Par plus grande prudence, encore, on pourrait utiliser la périphrase «responsable de la transformation des hydrocarbures», puisque c’est ce que produit la biodégradation.

-claste, -clastie, -clasie, -clasique : du grec «klastos», brisé, entrent dans la composition de quelques mots comme préfixe ou comme suffixe : «iconoclaste, cranioclasie».
