Conceivably the individual variations in promoter sequences reflect differences in promoter efficiency, allowing different DNA functional units to be transcribed to lesser or greater degrees. The fact that both binding sequences are AT-rich probably reflects the fact that such sequences denature much more easily than do GC-rich regions, and so are obvious targets for an enzyme like RNA polymerase, whose functioning demands local denaturations. 1, record 2, English, - GC%2Drich

2, record 2, French, - riche%20en%20GC

The ability of certain restriction enzymes to recognize rather short, specific sequences of DNA as targets for cleavage opens a direct approach to gene structure. It is possible to proceed to determine the sequence of DNA between points that are sufficiently close together by suitable choice of points, regions can be connected into a sequence of the entire gene. The sequence of the DNA then can be compared with the sequence of the protein that the gene represents. This allows the regions corresponding to the protein to be delineated; and, by extending the sequence in either direction, the distance to the next gene can be determined. 2, record 3, English, - gene%20structure

2, record 3, French, - structure%20du%20g%C3%A8ne

Some viruses may remain dormant inside host cells for long periods, causing no obvious change in their host cells (a stage known as the lysogenic phase). But when a dormant virus is stimulated, it enters the lytic phase: new viruses are formed, [they] self-assemble, and burst out of the host cell, killing the cell and going on to infect other cells. In the mid-1970s, recombinant DNA methods [led the way for] the isolation of ... genes [but it] faced several obstacles. One was the need for development of disabled hosts and vectors that would have no significant probability of surviving outside the laboratory, and that would satisfy the criteria of biological containment established in the 1976 National Institutes of Health guidelines. Another, more fundamental obstacle was the need for methods that would allow the identification of bacteria that carried the cloned genes in which we were interested. 1, record 29, English, - isolation%20of%20a%20gene

1, record 31, French, - ADN%20g%C3%A9nomique

Most mutant genes are recessive with respect to wild-type genes. This fact, puzzling to early geneticists, is now partially understood in terms of the gene-enzyme relation. The recessive phenotype often results from the failure of mutant genes to produce any functional protein (enzyme). In heterozygotes, however, there is always present one "good" gene, and correspondingly, a number of good gene products. Control mechanisms cause the wild-type gene in a heterozygote to produce more gene products than does each wild-type gene in a homozygote. 1, record 32, English, - gene%20product

1, record 32, French, - produit%20g%C3%A9nique

In the four plus systems, also designed to yield chains ending at defined positions, extension-product subsamples are incubated with only one nucleoside triphosphate instead of with three and with a different DNA polymerase, one that is manufactured by the bacterial virus designated T4. 1, record 33, English, - plus%20system
